da prosport bet: At Florida Park Craig Williams (116 not out) and Phillip du Plessis (85) put on an aggressive 193 for the second wicket to steer UWC to a surprise 132-run win over the much fancied Tygerberg side in their WP Cricket Association one-day cricket

Sports Staff09-Nov-2003At Florida Park Craig Williams (116 not out) and Phillip du Plessis (85) put on an aggressive 193 for the second wicket to steer UWC to a surprise 132-run win over the much fancied Tygerberg side in their WP Cricket Association one-day cricket encounter. The Varsity side excelled all round with their bowlers and batsmen coming out on top. Sent in to bat, they took full advantage with their opening pair John Koopman (22) and Williams putting on 52 for the first wicket. It was Williams and Du Plessis who did most of the damage with a record-breaking club partnership to entertain the crowd with excellent batting. Williams’ century came up in 207 minutes and included 11 fours and two towering sixes. Du Plessis also impressed with his innings, which included ten fours.Tygerberg gave an all-round poor performance. They were humiliated by the students who gave a sparkling performance. For Tygers it was only Brindley Gilbert who played the bowling on its merits with a knock of 46. Ronnie Masinda was the main wicket-taker for UWC, snapping up three for 19.At the Stephan Oval visitors Almar scored a convincing 10-wicket victory over Cape Tech-Green Point. Batting first, Cape Tech-Green Point were restricted to the miserable total of 116 for nine in their 50 overs. Only middle-order batsman Ander Nkatu, who top-scored with an impressive 52 made off 76 balls, including one six and five fours, offered any resistance to the Almar bowling attack.Left-arm spinner Craig Tatton picked up four for 15 in his 10 overs, while medium-pacer Nic Dunn finished with three for 17. In the Almar reply openers Zeke Snyman, who made an aggressive undefeated 69 off 55 balls, including one six and 13 fours, and Ali Bonora, who made a more sedate 39 not out, off 51 balls, including six fours, saw their side through to victory in 17.3 overs.Following his 140 not out in the previous one-day match against Kuils River, Jonathan Trott recorded another undefeated century as Bell-ville beat WPCC by 14 runs. Trott hit six fours and one six. Main destroyer for Bellville in the visitors’ innings was Sean Ackermann who bowled 6.2 overs and dismissed three batsmen for 14 runs.At Chukker Road, defending champions Victoria were dismissed for 187 off 50 allotted overs with Rowan Jacobs being top-scorer with 57 before being run out after hammering three boundaries during his stay at the wicket. The other batsman to shine was Deon Kemp who scored 33, which included four boundaries. Although Saints made a bold bid for victory with some good batting from Nezaam Adams (31), Remee Daniels (22) and Ian Jones (20), they failed to reach the target. They were dismissed with 3.4 overs left, losing in the end by a margin of 36 runs.At Silverglades Pinelands spinners Ross Bannatyne and Nick McConnochie removed the core of the Fish Hoek batting taking seven wickets between them for 25 runs in 17 overs. Fish Hoek collapsed to 73 runs all out in 36 overs. Ross Bannetyne followed up his bowling success with an undefeated 48 runs to take Pinelands to a seven-wicket victory.A match-winning century partnership between their openers, Ian Taylor and Wesley Green, steered Milnerton to an easy eight-wicket success against their hosts, Langa. Chasing a modest target after bowling Langa out for 143 (with strike bowler Garth West being the lynch-pin with a return of four wickets for 24 in under 10 overs), Green (57, nine fours) and Taylor (32) raised 111 runs in 100 minutes to establish the foundation for victory.
